Spastic cerebral palsy is often associated with injury to or developmental differences in the part of the brain called the cerebral cortex people who have spastic cerebral palsy experience unusually tight and stiff muscles which can affect movement and growth spastic cerebral palsy accounts for about 80 percent of all cases of cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy affects the areas of the brain that control muscle tone movement balance and coordination as a result all people who have cerebral palsy experience some degree of difficulty making smooth deliberate movements some people who have cerebral palsy have cognitive impairments while others are only affected physically. How is cerebral palsy diagnosed most children with cerebral palsy are diagnosed during the first 2 years of life but if a childs symptoms are mild it can be difficult for a doctor to make a reliable diagnosis before the age of 4 or 5 doctors will order a series of tests to evaluate the childs motor skills. Some children although not all will experience cognitive dysfunction as an associated effect of cerebral palsy cognitive issues can range from mild to severe but regardless of what level of function the child has medical professionals will recommend treatment options that can help the child lead a more productive life
